Digital Library (DL) is a super-capacity multimedia information management system based on computer network, it is with the basis of uniform
international standard and specifications, supported by digitized distributive mass resource databases, by means of intelligent searching technology, managed with E-business and transferred
through wide-band high-speed network, adopts object-oriented and Internet technologies to deliver full-sides content-oriented information services to information providers, client groups, partners and Digital Library staff.
The triangle architecture is of significant importance. At first, clients only access to library server to ensure the security of the
data stored in the object server. Otherwise, as many digital objects (such as scanned images, music and film) are of rather huge quantity of data, so positioning these frequently operating objects to the
locations that near by clients can most reduce numbers of copying and transferring object data. It also reduces network traffics and enhances the system performance. The structure of parting library
server from object server leaves a good expansibility for the future. One object server may meet the application requirements at the beginning of building the system, by the business expanding
rapidly, only need adding object servers but not affect the whole system operation.
Object servers can be common file servers or video data flow servers, or any combination of them. These object
servers can connect the high-performance and low-cost extended storage such as magnetic tape or compact disc with the methods of integrated classification, and thus can significantly speed up the
system searching and decrease the storage cost.
The primary functions of library server are to manage the index
information of library and in charge of carrying out various queries, and to deliver the requests by the user to relative object server.
Five main functions available: Content creation and capture, storage and
management, rights management, access and query, and information publication.
Content creation and capture
Various resource information in Digital Library such as articles, pictures,
sound recording and video recording are captured with the format for computer easy to access and communicate. Variety of technologies for scanning, identifying, compressing and
converting are introduced for creating digital resources. The system digitizes above-mentioned information and captures the content
through the open content creation application program interface (API) and relative technical products from other vendors. Moreover, the quality of digital images is improved by means of electronic
methods. The special functions such as content creating, image correction, converting, enhancing, editing, color adjusting and MPEG compressing are available by multiple tools and software packages.
Storage and Management
Information
management of Digital Library includes automotive indexing, archives creating, particularities getting and translation. Clients can search specific information in Chinese language with advanced
organization and sort tools. Database is used to manage table for data index and searching. Digital Library bands together the relative database technology and latest object-oriented technology
as well as multimedia technology to generate solutions with high practicability, integrality and security for users. The object server connects the external
memories, such as disks, tapes and compact discs, with the management method of integrated classification. The method is
implemented by system administer and is transparent to applications. Digital Library provides a data management tool independent of content, which supports operation to multiple systems.

application are integrated in the Digital Library to complete watermark implanting, fee counting and charging for additional copyright information and registered trademark. The application of
encryption techniques in the Digital Library ensures the integrality and security of the digital information transferring during publishing through INTERNET.
Search and Access
Abundant query technologies are
integrated in Digital Library, covering the tools for analyzing of text and image and the ones for searching of digital video and audio information.
Users can use the free text to search tool easily and naturally, and the
searched result is in ordered with the maximum similarity first and stored in a file. The search solution of Digital Library delivers text-retrieving
system based on concept by means of nature language processing technology and the technology of document sorting by statistics of
language and semantic. The Chinese full-text searching function integrated in Digital Library supports Chinese full-text search
engine, and analyzes language for documents when creating index, the analyzing includes that for text types, cutting words, identifying
digits and measure words, identifying Chinese proper nouns (e.g. Chinese names and the Chinese translation of foreign names),
operating of any type of Chinese words (for instance, standard format, synonym, concept, derivation and derivative), tracking the
fields of users as well as inheriting the functions of GTR full-text search engine (Boolean querying, paragraph locate searching in
relative searching, exact searching and supporting wildcards etc.). The Chinese search engine in Digital Library displays quick speed
and brings exact result. The image content search initiates a new domain on image information searching which can search images according to their color, gray degree, texture and location.
Distribution
Digital
Library can send information from any existing computer network selectively, whether it is with the traditional host/terminals
system or client/sever solution, and whether it is with commercial online services or the public electronic information network like Internet. The published
information can be displayed and read on any computer system with GUI. The DL published solution gained broad support in the inter-TV
application including VOD, remote education and inter-shopping. Digital Library also supports information creation, and displays information with dynamic or
